Yet many buyers are unsure what RAM actually is, how it differs from storage, or how much they truly need. Getting it right matters, because too little RAM makes even a powerful machine feel sluggish, while paying for far more than you will use is money that could have gone elsewhere. RAM is working memory, not storage
The most common confusion is between RAM and storage, since both are measured in gigabytes. They do very different jobs. Storage, whether a solid-state drive or a hard drive, is where your files and programs live permanently, even when the computer is switched off. RAM, which stands for random access memory, is the fast, temporary workspace the computer uses for whatever it is doing right now. A useful analogy is a desk: storage is the filing cabinet holding everything you own, while RAM is the desktop surface where you spread out the papers you are actively working on.

For the great majority of users, 16 gigabytes is the comfortable modern baseline, and 8 gigabytes is workable for genuinely light use. Buying far more than your tasks demand rarely makes a computer feel faster, because unused memory sits idle.
Practical points before you buy
A few extra considerations round out the decision. On many laptops the RAM is soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded later, so you must choose enough at purchase; on most desktops and some laptops it can be added down the line, giving you room to start modest and expand. It is also worth knowing that more RAM does not speed up tasks that were never short of it. If your computer already has plenty for what you do, adding more will not make it faster, whereas a faster storage drive or processor might.
Finally, keep an eye on how your current machine behaves. If it slows dramatically only when you have many things open, you are likely short on RAM. If it is slow even doing one thing at a time, the bottleneck is more likely the storage drive or the processor.
